It’s true – the public relations industry needs some good PR.

From chatting with people, it has become apparent to me that not everyone knows what people in public relations do. If I were a teacher, builder or a nurse, most people have a good sense of my day to day working life.

So, what is Public Relations and why is it so Important? As someone who migrated from a live media environment, I can find myself explaining the same things. We don’t buy advertisements, we don’t own journalists, and we don’t hand out free samples on the street. Yes, we try very much to promote our clients, our products and indeed ourselves, but in PR we have a particular skill set that we use to persuade our audiences using unpaid or earned methods. Whether it’s traditional media, social media or speaking engagements, we communicate with audiences through trusted, unpaid, sources.

It is about sending the right messages to the right people, creating a more substantial brand reputation.

Is PR important?

Public Relations is the most effective way to build on existing marketing strategies and create a solid online reputation. If you think about it, when you are looking for a product or service, it helps that others can. vouch for their services. Reputation is key to building a sustainable competitive advantage and becoming a preferred provider.

Are PR and marketing the same thing?

While there is no doubt that the two functions complement each other perfectly, the short answer is no. Marketing will focus on promoting and selling a product or service, whereas PR focuses on maintaining a positive reputation for a company as a whole.

How can public relations help a company?

Public Relations Increases Brand Credibility – Publicity through public relations gives true credibility to your product/ service as the content is more authentic and informative. Planned, executed and managed correctly, a PR strategy will bridge that trust gap between a business and its would-be clients or customers.

Why public relations as a career?

PR is fast-paced, varied and exciting. Graduates can work in agencies, work in-house at a corporation or offer services as a consultant or freelancer.

Are PR jobs in demand?

Absolutely! PR is a thriving sector. The PRCA (Public Relations Consultants Association Ireland) states that Ireland has one of the fastest-moving employment markets in the EU right now, and PR is one of the success stories of our resurgent economy. More graduates are entering the industry and there is an increase in established professionals (e.g. journalists) making the crossover into PR.
